Many by now have heard of the 33 Chilean miners that were trapped underground for over two months. During these months, we on the surface have prayed, handed out brochures explaining the problem, and done everything possible to try to help get these trapped miners out from under the surface of the earth. On October 12, 2010, these men were finally rescued and brought to the surface. Nearly half a mile underground, these men have survived on what we have been able to send down to them, very carefully, for well over two months now.

Originally, no one knew the status of these men for about 17 days. While they were down mining, 700,000 tons of rock fell in on the tunnel on the 5th of August. No one knew whether they were alive or dead at that point. On August 22, one of the many probes that were used to try to find the miners, did just that. When the probe came back to the surface, it had notes attached to it saying that the miners, all 33 of them, were in a refuge shelter. They had had food supplies that were only meant to last a few days. The men had made them stretch to last the entire 17 days that they were not able to be in contact.

Eventually, bore holes were able to be made to get more food and other supplies down to the men. Even a video camera was able to be taken down, to allow the men to communicate with family members while they were still trapped.

Originally, it was not expected that the men would be able to be fully rescued until about late December. Luckily, this is not the case and they were all able to get out of their shelter and reunite with their families long before the holidays set in.
